Martina F. Aufiero
Managing Director, Safeguard Scientifics
Tina brings more than 20 years of experience in principal investing, M&A, strategy and board governance to Safeguard, where she is responsible for sourcing and deploying capital in early- and growth-stage technology companies, providing operational oversight and driving successful exits for Safeguard’s partner companies. Prior to joining Safeguard, Tina most recently served as Managing Director and Head of Corporate Development for Tradeweb, a leading New York-based financial technology firm, where she led several key acquisitions and inorganic growth initiatives. Previously, Tina served as Vice President of Principal Strategic Investing at Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS), where she led numerous investments in the financial technology sector as part of a $1.0 billion portfolio. On behalf of Goldman Sachs, Tina served on the Boards of Directors for APX Inc., the Green Exchange LLC, Medley Global Advisors LLC and LiquidityMatch LLC and as a board alternate on FXAll Inc. Her experience as a board member includes Audit Committee Chair and leadership roles on Compensation and Investment Committees, as well as holding a corporate officer position for a consortium of 11 global banks.
Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Tina was the Director of Mergers & Acquisitions for Moneyline Telerate (acquired by Reuters in 2004). Previously, she was a Manager in the strategy consulting practice of Andersen Consulting and held several roles with the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO). A certified public accountant, Tina earned a B.S. in economics from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and an M.B.A. from the UCLA Anderson School of Management.
Rick is a serial entrepreneur, who has grown a dominant group of Boston based businesses over the last 35 years in the construction industry. Rick currently serves as President and CEO of Newport Corporation and Newport Materials, which specialize in heavy-highway and major roadway infrastructure and environmentally aware materials reprocessing. As an initial investor, and a founding member of Pneuron, Rick has observed Pneuron Corporation progress from an innovative whiteboard concept in 2009, to the successful disruptive global technology firm it has become today. Rick is actively involved in many local charitable organizations.
Nathanael V. Lentz
Managing Partner, Osage Partners
Nate is Managing Partner of Osage Partners having joined the firm 2008. Previously Nate was President and CEO of Verticalnet, Inc., a leading provider of on-demand supply management software solutions, which was sold in January, 2008 to Italy-based BravoSolution. He was attributed with leading the transformation of Verticalnet from an online operator of web portals to a proven software solution provider, while navigating the company through a financial turnaround and ultimately a successful exit.
Prior to Verticalnet, Nate was a Partner at Mercer Management Consulting and led both the San Francisco and the Hong Kong offices. During his time at Mercer, he worked closely with multinational companies and high growth emerging businesses both in the U.S. and in over fifteen countries globally.
Ron is former Chairman and CEO of State Street Corporation, the 3rd largest custodian bank in the world. During his tenure as CEO operating revenues grew at a compound annual rate of 18.9 percent. During the same period non-U.S. revenues increased to 35 percent of total revenue. Prior to his position as Chairman and CEO, Ron served as President and COO where he was responsible for investment servicing, securities finance, investment research and trading, and information technology.
Arnie retired in 2001 from MFS Investment Management as Senior Executive Vice President, Member of the Board of Directors and the Management Committee after a 30+ year career. Active in the Boston area Angel Community and currently, Vice Chairman and a Director of First Commons Bank, NA, a Director of Hub Management Co. and a Director of Sevo Nutraceuticals, Inc. Arnie also serves as a member of a number of Advisory Boards, including Vestmark, Successimo, ai Resources and The Capital Network.
Stephen T. Zarrilli
President and CEO, Safeguard Scientifics
Over the course of a 30 year career, Steve Zarrilli has served as CEO and CFO of both publicly traded and privately held, venture-backed companies. Having been directly involved with the launch of two businesses, Steve understands the operational and strategic challenges that entrepreneurs face. He understands what it takes to build a great company based on his deep domain expertise as an entrepreneur, board member and financier.
In addition to his responsibilities at Safeguard, Steve is a Board Member for Safeguard’s partner companies Apprenda and Pneuron; University City Science Center; and Virtus Investment Partners (NASDAQ:VRTS). In addition, Steve is Chairman of the Board at Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania (BFTP/SEP); and Chair, Board of Trustees at LaSalle University.
Steve is a graduate of LaSalle University in Philadelphia earning a B.S. degree in Accounting. He is a former Certified Public Accountant, and is a frequent lecturer on corporate governance, financial management, organizational and capital development matters. He also completed the Advanced Management Program (AMP) at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
